“I don’t have enough patience to homeschool” and other thoughts

Let’s get real about a common concern I often hear in the homeschooling community: “I don’t have enough patience to homeschool my kids.” I completely understand this feeling. I've been homeschooling for 14 years, and is it perfect? Not at all. Do I feel like I need to work on my patience daily? Yes.

There are certainly days when I feel overwhelmed and think, "Oh my God, there's no way I can handle this." Sometimes I find myself crying in my room or in my car. But I believe that patience is a skill set I've had to develop over time.

There’s never a day when all three of my kids—ages 14, 11, and 8—are doing what they need to do at the same time. There’s always one child who is losing it, doing something they shouldn’t, or struggling with emotional regulation. I have to step in as the adult and say, “You know what? Let’s refocus and do something else. Let’s change it up, go for a walk, or whatever it may be.”

If you feel that patience is an obstacle for you, believe me, you will develop that skill. It’s something you’ll have to continuously work on. As adults, we hopefully have our frontal lobes fully developed, which should help us make good decisions. We need to be examples for our kids, showing them how to make good choices later in life.

We must calmly explain situations, focus, refocus, and sometimes be flexible and go with the flow. As a business owner, I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve been interrupted by business-related issues. I often have to stop what I’m doing to speak with a client or handle an emergency situation on-site. I constantly remind myself to get back on track because tomorrow is a new day.

If you have homeschooling questions about Virginia, I’ve been doing it for over a decade and would love for you to visit my website, www.thefunschoolers.com.

Peace out, guys!
