Raising stronger kids with adversity: a lesson in trees and parenting

Embracing Adversity: A Life Lesson from Trees preparing for Space

I’ve always been a fan of fun facts that not only entertain but also impart valuable life lessons.

This week, I came across an intriguing YouTube video about a unique biome that scientists are constructing to simulate how plants might thrive in outer space. This project includes everything from towering trees to vibrant bushes, fruits, and vegetables, all set in a meticulously controlled environment with perfect temperature and humidity.

However, there’s a twist: while the scientists have successfully created an ideal setting for most plants, they have struggled with the trees. Despite their careful planning, the trees keep falling over. This led the scientists to embark on a deep dive into the reasons behind this issue.

You might assume that the solution lies in tweaking humidity levels or adjusting fertilizers, but the surprising answer centers around adversity and challenges.

Scientists discovered that trees in the wild develop irregular growth rings as they face various environmental stresses—like heavy rains or droughts. These challenges make them stronger and more resilient.

In contrast, the trees in the controlled biome, which grew in a perfect environment with evenly spaced rings, lacked the strength to withstand even minor disturbances.

To address this, the scientists decided to introduce controlled adversity—simulating wind and other environmental factors—to help the trees develop the resilience they lacked in their perfect world.

This concept struck a chord with me as a parent and business owner. Often, my instinct is to protect my children from hardship and challenges. However, this experiment made me reconsider the importance of allowing them to face some adversity in order to grow stronger.

In our family, we embrace the idea of learning through challenges. We run our own businesses, and our kids are involved in the process.

Whether it’s helping on the job site, assisting with my photography work, or managing our rental property, they learn responsibility and teamwork.

We also encourage participation in sports, community service, and leadership opportunities. These experiences allow them to develop problem-solving skills and resilience, much like the trees growing stronger through adversity.

If you ever feel uncertain about your parenting approach, remember this story about the trees. It’s a compelling reminder that facing challenges can lead to growth and strength.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on how you incorporate challenges and problem-solving into your parenting. Share your experiences in the comments!

Until next time, take care!
