Former teacher here and we're going to be going over” Game Changer- book access for all kids” here in this channel today.
We're talking about libraries and the pros and cons of having library access to kids
🎉now in the last 2 videos- If you've been following along we have already proven the importance of why kids need access to books and how that has a direct correlation to their success in school.
So you might be thinking sure “just the public library. No problem.”
📣Well, it’s actually more complicated than that
and I'm going to show you in the book why this can be putting some barriers on some families that actually need books the most
🎉barriers to libraries
⁉️not every family has a utility bill or a lease in their name to show proof of residency.
💪When applying for a library card for families living paycheck to paycheck the risk of Library fines and fees May hinder children's Library use
📣because caregivers worry about paying a lost, damaged or-late materials and
✅the book goes on to talk about an real student that was now in sixth grade.
📙📖But at the time of third grade, they lost their copy of Charlotte's Web
📕📕📗and becauseof the Lost book for the next 3 years, they could no longer check out any books
📚and the teacher in the story found out that they literally didn’t even have any books or reading materials-at the house and did not have a library card due-to some other factors as well.
📓So the school literally cut off the only access to books that this kid had from 3 years ago and never made amends.
📔So the kid never really grew up in the school being able to check out books.
🤯So what should schools be doing?
📕 maybe having a-donor or a family, donate money to cover all the late or return fees from students.
📔Maybe just having no penalty at all. So that kids can always have access to books
📕and maybe some other creative ways as we continue the series.
Hope you can join me. Have a good one.
We'll see you soon.
