The Power of Reading and books: the most important thing we can do as parents: A Homeschool Mom's Perspective
As a homeschool mom for the past 13 years and a former teacher, I often receive the same question: "What is the best curriculum for my child?" While there are many great options out there, my answer is always the same: the most valuable thing you can do for your kids is to read to them and surround them with books at home.
Let me explain why this is so crucial. I recently came across a TED Talk that highlights the direct correlation between literacy and various life outcomes. The data shared is eye-opening and emphasizes the importance of fostering a love for reading.

Summary:
Consider this: if your teenage daughter has a reading level below the fourth grade, she is six times more likely to become pregnant. Yes, you read that right—six times. That’s a powerful reason to prioritize reading.
Now, if you’re wondering about the implications of illiteracy in broader terms, let me share another statistic: 75% of all welfare recipients are functionally illiterate.
And if you ask, "What does that lead to?" I would share another staggering fact: 90% of all dropouts rely on welfare.
Moreover, if you are a dropout and functionally illiterate, you become ineligible for 90% of the jobs available in our country. There is a clear and troubling link between illiteracy, poverty, and incarceration.
These statistics illustrate just how vital it is to prioritize literacy in our homes. By encouraging reading from a young age, we can help break this cycle and empower our children for a brighter future. So, let's make reading a priority—it could truly change lives.
