How much time is actually spent learning in school vs wasted time- the results will shock you.

As a homeschooling mom for the past 14 years, I often find myself in conversations where people are genuinely shocked when I share that my kids typically spend only one to two hours a day on core subjects. This might raise eyebrows, but let me explain how we achieve this and why it works.

Did you know that only about 25 to 30% of a traditional school day is spent on actual instructional learning? This means that out of a seven-hour school day, students are only engaged in learning for about 1.5 to 2 hours. The rest of the time? It’s often filled with distractions—traveling between classrooms, socializing with peers, and navigating interruptions.

Let’s break it down:

25% of 7 hours= 1.75 hours

30% of 7 hours = 2.1 hours

So, for students spending seven hours in school, they might only receive around an hour and a half to two hours of focused learning.

The Benefits of Homeschooling

This is where homeschooling shines. By creating a focused learning environment, my kids can delve into their subjects without the constant interruptions that typically characterize a school day. The one-on-one attention allows us to tailor the learning experience to their individual needs and pace.

For example, my daughter, now just 14 years old, is tackling 10th-grade math. She is on track to graduate in just two years from our Virginia-based curriculum and is even eager to start dual enrollment in college at the age of 16! It’s amazing to see how much they can achieve when distractions are minimized and learning is prioritized.
