The hard truth about homeschooling that nobody wants to talk about is this: as an adult and a parent, you wear many hats. You are the default parent, the principal, the social worker, the teacher, the cook—everything.
Yes, we assign our kids responsibilities and chores, but the mental load can feel overwhelming.
So how do I cope in healthy ways? I've had to learn various coping strategies by reading books on mental capacity, mental load, motherhood, child psychology, and more. I want to ensure that I can be a positive example for my children, demonstrating coping mechanisms, self-restraint, self-control, patience, and all those essential qualities.
I can teach them math and how to read, but if they don't learn how to be good parents and good humans, then I feel I've failed.
My main goal is not only to educate my kids academically but also to prepare them for life, helping them become "green flag" people.
Do you know the terms "red flags" and "green flags"? My goal is to be a green flag parent and raise green flag kids who grow into green flag adults and spouses, regardless of what they become. That is the hardest part about homeschooling.
So how do I approach this positively? I make it a point to go to the gym regularly, especially when they have drop-off childcare available.
I listen to audiobooks to expand my mental capacity, grow my patience, and learn more about children. I'm also running my own small business to maintain my identity outside of home.
My husband and I prioritize date nights, whether weekly or monthly. I try to get away for at least a week each year, and I have a solid childcare rotation with friends and family. I’m fortunate to have a wonderful partner and supportive parents who may not always be nearby but are always ready to help with a call or text.
I also have a women's small group of moms that I can reach out to anytime. If I'm struggling, I can send a quick message to them for support. Having a village is crucial, and creating your own support network is so important.
So there you have it—those are my little tips!
